On Easter Sunday 2019, terrorists attacked Sri Lankan churches, killing over 400 innocent people. Local Salesians quickly responded and went to the immediate support of the victims and their families.
Our emergency response included psychological first aid for family members of the dead and wounded – and for others directly affected by the bombings. We organised specialised medical services, periodic family visits, additional classes for children who could not attend school due to security restrictions, and peace-building activities. In addition, we provided recreational activities for children who had lost their parents/guardians – a form of therapeutic intervention for enhanced psychological wellbeing.
